"Bankruptcy From A Previous Marriage"

Life After Bankruptcy Stories

My husband and I filed bankruptcy back in 2000 . . . right after our marriage. My husband had been married before and his ex-wife really screwed up his finances after their divorce and my husband and I did make some unwise decisions as a young and newly married couple helping to ruin our own credit.

We found creditors calling us night and day. All I could do was cry and try to hide from the phone calls.

Right around this time my husband found himself laid off from his job of 10 years. We were in miserable debt and the debt relief counselors kept telling us the same dreaded words - "The only way out is bankruptcy."

Bankrutptcy? No way I thought! I felt like it was such a taboo! But we had no other choices than to file.

I called my Dad to help us out and we went to many different attorneys until we found one that we were comfortable with. My Dad said the most important thing was to be comfortable and feel safe in the hands of your bankruptcy attorney or all I would do was worry day and night.

It took a few weeks but I finally started to feel safer and more secure about all of this. My husband was doing most of the work for me, but I was going right along with him.

It took 2 years for us to fully pay off our Chapter 13 bankruptcy but the good thing was that we did get to keep our car. And there are many ways you can and will be able to save the things you need!! That is really a bonus, at least it was to me!

Today our credit is almost rebuilt! We now own our own home and 2 new vehicles. These are things that 10 years ago I never imagined that we would even be able to dream about! Bankruptcy is a very scary thing, but was well worth it in the long run. No matter how worried you are, it really can be the best thing, and I am soooo very glad we chose to go through this!

In fact, we appreciate our bankruptcy attorney so well that we still send him a Christmas card every year!
