Here you will learn how to find approved providers of Alaska credit counseling and debtor education.
Pursuant to the new bankruptcy laws enacted in 2005, individuals who file Chapter 7 (with limited exceptions) must:
1. take a credit counseling course from an approved Alaska credit counseling provider within six months before filing bankruptcy; and
2. complete a debtor education course from an approved Alaska debtor education agency prior to receiving a bankruptcy discharge.
There is a small fee ($50.00 to $100.00) for both credit counseling and debtor education, however, this fee may be waived depending on a person's ability to pay. The fee waiver must be requested from the agency prior to receipt of services.
Both required courses can be taken one of three ways - in person, online, or by telephone. The pre-bankruptcy credit counseling course lasts approximately an hour. The pre-discharge debtor education course is approximately two hours long.
For more information regarding either course, see our article about the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process.
