and Debtor Education

Learn how to find approved providers of Alabama credit counseling and debtor education.

Pursuant to the new bankruptcy laws enacted in 2005, individuals who file personal bankruptcy (with limited exceptions) must:

  • Take a credit counseling course from an approved provider within six months before filing bankruptcy; and
  • Complete a debtor education course from an approved Alabama debtor education agency prior to receiving a bankruptcy discharge.

Each district has its own list of approved credit counseling providers and debtor education agencies. Click on any of the links below to learn more:

There is a small fee ($50.00 to $100.00) for both credit counseling and debtor education, however, this fee may be waived depending on a person's ability to pay. The fee waiver must be requested from the agency prior to receipt of services.
